General Community Resources
The Directory of Nonprofit Organizations of Color in Minnesota is a listing of not-for-profit associations, organizations, and mutual assistance and fraternal groups in the state of Minnesota that primarily serve communities of color. Threre is a searchable online version which contains all of the information in the latest print edition. The latest print edition can be ordered, as well as downloaded in pdf form. Family & Children’s Service (FCS). Offers many programs and events that are open for participation. They also go “on the road” to neighborhood meetings, community festivals, conferences and other events where they can make a difference in people’s lives. On their site there is a list of services and events that you and your family can benefit from.
Family Means provides an array of counseling, education and support so individuals and families can thrive during each stage of life, and believes a family consists of two or more people, whether living together or apart, related by blood, marriage, adoption or commitment to care for one another.
HOURCAR. A non profit organization that buys, insures, and maintains a fleet of member-shared cars. HOURCAR takes on all the responsibilities of owning the vehicles, including paying for fuel. HOURCARs are parked in hubs near members’ homes and workplaces. Members make HOURCAR reservations online or by phone, and pay monthly dues and car usage fees. You pay only for what you use!
Keep it Local. A one stop internet shop for things from autos to buying and selling goods. Keep it local is an online shopping site that lists areas throughout the state of Minnesota.
Minneapolis 3-1-1. Need to report a broken street light? Is there a stray dog roaming your neighborhood? Do you just want a question about the City of Minneapolis answered? Minneapolis 311 can help. Just call 3·1·1 weekdays from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM and a 311 agent will assist you. Minneapolis 311 is part of an ongoing effort to make Minneapolis more accessible to people who live, work and enjoy the city and its resources.

Minneapolis Community Education. Here you can learn skills that will enhance you in many different ways, from learning how to do simple repairs around your house to the basics of financial management to resume writing and skill building for better jobs in the future. In addition, they also provide physical fitness activities for you and your family to enjoy. Courses are offered at various schools, as well as online. Costs and locations may vary.

Minneapolis Neighborhood Organizations. Can be a helpful resource to you and your family, by providing you with various programs, networking events and much more.
The Minneapolis Urban League is a minority, community-based organization that has served Minneapolis since 1926. Each year, over 20,000 people look to the Urban League for assistance in overcoming barriers that prevent them from accessing quality employment, housing, education, social services, and health care.
The Minnesota Minority Encouragement Program (MMEP) provides programs and services to the community, parents, educators, and students. Through parental involvement, summer enrichment, and professional development, each program provides tools for students of color to advance successfully through the school system. It is through the collaborative efforts of the schools, communities, businesses, policymakers, and organizations that MMEP can serve students of color.
Get your children involved in community activities and athletics. Get involved with your local community/recreational center. There are many scattered throughout Minneapolis, offering events, tips, and opportunities for you and your children year round. Sabathani Life Skills Center can provide you wil jok skill training in partnership with the Minnesota Workforce Center and MFIP (MN Family Investment Act) and Dislocated Worker Partner clients, these classes can enhance your career. Regular scheduelled offerings include: Technology Equipment Training on 24 computers, Mastering the PC and Multi-media Accessories for the Workforce; Rule III Childcare/Infant-Toddler CPR & First Aid; Medical Terminology for the Health Care and Dentistry Fields; as well as general Office Assistant Training. Minnesota Minority Encouragement Program's Summer Enrichment Guide. Our Summer Enrichment Guide connects students to programs that increase their chances of going to college. It is an easy to use listing that reaches a wide range of K-12 students, families, educators and people who work with youth in Minnesota.The guide provides valuable information about scholarship opportunities for summer programs as well as helpful hints on choosing a program.

The Reuse Center

The Reuse Center. Offers low cost reusable building materials that have been donated by individuals and manufacturers' surplus. You can save a bundle on your home maintenance projects, when purchasing cabinets, doors, plumbing supplies, light fixtures, and much more. The Reuse Center carries all types of items, for homes of all ages.

Twin Cities Beehive. This is a service of United Way providing people with information resources such as transportation, housing, and educational services. Click on the link or call their referral services at 2-1-1.

Twin Cities Free Market. The Free Market SM is an innovative residential materials exchange program to divert reusable and repairable items from the waste stream. Find free reusable items from appliances, bathroom fixtures, furniture, and much more. And find a home for things that you want to give away.
Twin Cities Green Guide. Educates Twin Cities Metro area residents about environmental issues, serves as a quick environmental reference tool and promote a self-sustaining and community-oriented lifestyle.

City of Minneapolis. Looking at doing a home maintenance or renovation project on your own? It is recommended that you learn the rules and regulations of doing so in compliance with city ordinance. The Hearts & Hammers Twin Cities Inc. is a private non-profit organization that serves local communities by organizing volunteers to revitalize the homes of homeowners so they may continue living in a home of warmth, security and pride. This is done by solely relying on a strong pool of volunteers and the financial support of local organizations. Home Depot How to Clinics

The Home Depot Weekly how to Clinics. From installing a ceiling fan to decorating your windows, free National Clinics from The Home Depot will teach you how to create projects that will improve the look and value of your home. There’s no need to pre-register – click on the link for the schedule and show up at The Home Depot nearest you for the clinic of your choice.

 

 

Nothside Neighborhood Housing Services. Offers a three-hour course on educating new homeowners about the financial opportunities and responsibilities of their new homes and are shown how to make the necessary maintenance and repairs to protect their equity on their low to moderate incomes. This three-hour class is held twice a month in Northside NHS offices at the following location.

Xcel Energy. Offers you and your family tips and tricks on how to keep your energy costs affordable.
Financial Matters
Accountability Minnesota. Provides accounting assistance and tax help to low-income individuals and small business owners. In order to qualify for free help on your taxes: your annual income must be; $27,000 or less for individuals or $37,000 for families. At times there will be Free Tax clinics at various sites, check their web site frequently for times.
CenterPoint Energy. Saves you on everything from energy conservation services to specialized payment programs like the No Surprise Bill and Budget Plan Programs.
CEE Financial Resources can help make all your home improvement projects come to life. Take advantage of the various home improvement financing, forclosure prevention, credit counseling prgrams, and home performance inspection services. Nine Public Programs in One Screening Tool. For a smart, one-stop approach to screening families for public programs including health care, child care, tax credits, food support, and energy assistance.
Renewable energy. For a few dollars a month, you can support for renewable energy sources such as wind, hydro, refuse-derived and biomass fuel power. Watch your Xcel Energy bill for an enrollment form. Depending on where you live, you may also be able to order power from Great River Energy, which supplies renewable power to 28 electric cooperatives in Minnesota.

Housing Resource Centers. Provides residences with extensive, high quality and individualized assistance with home improvement projects and home improvement loans. Assistance is provided at no cost. Locations in Northeast and South Minneapolis.

LSS Financial Services. Combines housing education with budget counseling, the financial counselors will assist families with a wide variety of housing issues, including pre-purchase, post-purchase, foreclosure and delinquency problems. LSS Financial counselors are certified in foreclosure prevention, homeowner education and counseling, and reverse mortgage counseling. Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Program. Twin Cities Habitat For Humanity provides counseling, advocacy, referrals to additional resources and, in some cases, financial assistance to families facing foreclosure.

Homeowner's Training Events

Hands On Home Maintenance Lab, 9:30 A.M.-12:30 P.M. at Minneapolis Neighborhood Housing Services. Come and gain experience on how to take care of your home, from basic tools and tips. Get acquainted with fellow CLCLT homeowners and neighbors, as well as local community resources. Get information from the Home Maintenance Manual, as well as other take-home tips that this course offers. Overall this course will provide you with a personal in-home orientation, by helping you better understand your home and all of its aspects. Location: 1501 Dupont Ave N
