In 2001, the Minneapolis Community Land Trusts Initiative (MCLTI) formed as
a collaboration of Powderhorn Residents Group (PRG), Seward Redesign, Powderhorn
Park Neighborhood Association (PPNA) and the Lyndale Neighborhood Development
Corporation (LNDC) to research and investigate the potential of creating a
community land trust tool for neighborhoods in South Minneapolis. Through research,
community conversations, an environmental scan and identification of opportunities
that took place, it became evident that the entire City of Minneapolis could
benefit from such a model. The result was the MCLTI Working Group incorporating
the City of Lakes Community Land Trust (CLCLT) in the fall of 2002. The City
of Lakes Community Land Trust is one of over one hundred CLTs in the nation
today.
Minneapolis
residents formed the City of Lakes Community Land Trust to:
- Provide quality, permanently
affordable housing, primarily for low- to moderate-income families.
- Increase affordable housing choices
in Minneapolis.
- Offer a unique option for home
ownership.
- Help land trust residents and
neighbors take care of their homes and neighborhoods.
- Ensure that land in the city
is used to improve community life.
